Imtiaz Ali sets the record straight on the sequel to Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor Khan's Jab We Met in the works

There have been reports making the rounds about Jab We Met 2 over the past few weeks.

There have been claims that Imtiaz Ali, director of the superhit cult classic flick Jab We Met (2007), is in talks to direct a sequel. According to a number of rumours, it is unclear whether or not the original cast, including Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor Khan, will return for the sequel. Fans were piqued when Shahid mentioned working with Imtiaz on a film during a discussion session on X in June of this year. There was naturally much speculation as to whether or not Jab We Met 2 would finally reunite the actor-director team after 16 years apart.

And now, Imtiaz has addressed the reports of a Jab We Met sequel in an exclusive interview with News18. The filmmaker confirmed that it's not happening. Additionally, Imtiaz said that he doesn't have a story for Jab We Met 2 yet. These stories have been reported, and he has read the articles. The Love Aaj Kal helmer has no idea what to say about these because no one consulted him before they were released. But they will have to wait and see.

The fan on X had said to Shahid that he has observed that Imtiaz and the actor have been chatting a lot recently and asked if anything was being planned at the moment. To which Shahid remarked, "Smart boy," in response.

Imtiaz Ali's current project:

In addition to directing the critically acclaimed films Rockstar (2011) and Tamasha (2015), Imtiaz is currently at work on the AR Rahman musical film Chamkila which will feature Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra in the lead roles. The director also gave an update on the upcoming film to the portal, saying that it's coming pretty soon. When the people see it, Imtiaz prays they approve. It was a refreshing change of pace for him as a filmmaker to work on Chamkila. It required the director to unlearn a lot of things, which is why he felt so invigorated while making it, and he has no doubt that viewers will experience the same thing.

The experience of working on Chamkila allowed him to reconnect with a different side of himself, and he emerged from the project feeling revitalised and energised. Imtiaz can't wait until everyone sees it.

Relatedly, Amar Singh Chamkila, a great Punjabi musician who shot to prominence in the 1980s with his rousing performances, is the inspiration for the film Chamkila. His untimely death at the age of 27 was a tragedy. Diljit plays the lead role, while Parineeti portrays his wife, Amarjot. The film is set for a Netflix premiere in 2024.
