IFFK 2022 kicks off; Anurag Kashyap says the best of Indian cinema comes from Kerala

Actor Bhavana and Chief Minister Pinaray Vijayan also took the stage for the inauguration ceremony

The International Film Festival of Kerala, one of the biggest film festivals in the country, kicked off yesterday in the state capital. The inauguration ceremony took place at the Nishagandhi Auditorium to a packed crowd.

Chief Minister Pinaray Vijayan inaugurated the event with director Anurag Kashyap and Kurdish filmmaker Lisa Calan, a survivor of ISIS terror among those present on the occasion.

Actor Bhavana took the stage to a rapturous crowd to light the lamp at the event, with director and chairman of Kerala State Chalachitra Academy, Ranjith, inviting the actor onto stage as “a female symbol of fight”.

Anurag Kashyap, who was invited to speak, said that the best of Indian cinema comes from Kerala. “I make movies in Hindi where we distort history while Kerala is actually chronicling the times we live in with their cinema so it is so great to be here," said Kashyap.

The filmmaker also added that his closest collaborators are from Kerala and that it is inspiring to see filmmakers from Kerala experiment with cinema, while keeping it rooted.

This year's film festival is an eight day programme which will see over 173 films screened. While classic Indian films such as Mughal-E-Azam and Kummatty will be screened, the event will also feature critically acclaimed films such as The Worst Person in the World, I'm Not The River Jhelum, Pedro, Great Freedom and Titane.
