Idris Elba to voice Knuckles in the upcoming sequel of Sonic the Hedgehog

The Suicide Squad star has been roped in to provide the voice for Knuckles the Echidna in the live-action movie, Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

Idris Elba is all set to provide a voiceover for a cartoon game character for the first time in a live-action adaptation. For the sequel of Sonic the Hedgehog, he will be joining Ben Schwartz, who voices the titular character, along with the returning live-action actors like James Marsden (Tom Wachowski), Tika Sumpter (Maddie Wachowski) and Jim Carrey (Doctor Robotnik).

Jeff Fowler is returning to direct the upcoming sequel after its blockbuster first part that was produced and distributed by Paramount Pictures in association with SEGA Sammy Group. Elba made it official by announcing it on social media.

Based on the video game developed by the Japanese MNC, Sega, Pat Casey, Josh Miller and John Whittington have scripted the upcoming movie. Elba’s character Knuckles is a red Echidna, who is the guardian of the Master Emerald in the video game. He is also known to have temper and is also a fighter. The sequel will probably see Jim Carrey’s Dr Robotnik team up with Knuckles as they search for an emerald that contains the power to build and destroy civilisations.

The first part was one of the last blockbuster movies that we got to see in theatres before pandemic hit. Paramount Pictures announced that its sequel was in development in May 2020. Filming of the movie took place in Vancouver and Hawaii during March and June 2021.

According to the announcement by Paramount Pictures, the movie is scheduled to release on April 8, 2022.
