Naslen K Gafoor stormed his way to Rs 100-crore club with Premalu directed by Girish A D and also starring Mamitha Baiju. And months later, the director-young star was back with another film I Am Kathalan. But unlike the fun rom-com of Premalu, I Am Kathalan follows Vishnu as he decides to use his hacking skills to get back at his girlfriend’s father who humiliates him. So, will Vishnu (Naslen) be caught by the hacking expert (Lijomol Jose) recruited by the father? Read on to know what happened at the climax of I Am Kathalan, a cyber-thriller.

I Am Kathalan plot

Naslen plays the laid-back Vishnu, who is not exactly worried about his BTech backlogs even as he helps friends with his hacking skills. But when his girlfriend Shilpa (Anishma Anilkumar) begins to distance herself from him, Vishnu is worried and pursues her. However, this ends up in a face-off with her father Chacko Periyadan (Dileesh Pothan), who derides and slaps him. Vishnu then decides to avenge the humiliation and hacks into Periyadan’s software at his company.

I Am Kathalan movie review: Premalu duo’s hacker drama clicks in parts, but lacks the Girish AD magic

I Am Kathalan ending explained

Girish AD settles for a small town in Kerala to narrate his techno-thriller, a clear deviation from most of the other movies we have seen from the genre. Even when Vishnu sets about to hack his way into the software of Periyadan (also the company name), he uses his very dated desktop computer to strike his network and assumes the anonymous name of Kathalan (which went into the title). However, when they put up resistance, Vishnu and his buddies use very simple techniques to strike back. Though we don't know if it is possible to hack in such a manner, the simplistic yet genius process through which they achieve this is hilarious.

Chacko Periyadan, who runs a chit fund business, is largely computer illiterate and seeks the help of cyber security expert Simi (Lijomol Jose) to protect their system. She effectively blocks his next attempt but gets beaten again. Amid this, Shilpa strongly suspects that Vishnu is behind the hacking and confides in her fiance Mathew (Vineeth Vasudevan). Mathew then instigates Vishnu to try and hack again after Simi says that one more attempt would reveal the identity of the hacker.

Amid this, Shilpa and Mathew’s betrothal ceremony is held that even Vishnu attends. As they head back, Vishnu tells his friend that 'not everything is over' and we see Periyadan’s server catching fire, but Simi manages to track the location of the hacker.

Amid this Vishnu and his friend find a police jeep following their bike. They fear the worst but Vishnu refuses to stop the bike. But as Periyadan marches into the police station to find the culprit, it is revealed that Shilpa’s fiance Mathew has been caught by the police.

Simi realises that the hacker had manipulated Mathew’s MAC ID to corner him. It is then revealed that Vishnu had sent a link to Mathew under the pretext of a wedding photography website and when he clicked on it, Vishnu got his MAC ID. Vishnu then uses this to mask his MAC ID, and evades getting caught.

However, Vishnu admits he got scared by the police. Towards the end, Simi says that she has moved to Bangalore and joined her previous company. Though the police wrapped up the case, Simi categorically states Kathalan is a criminal and she is confident of catching him one day. The movie has an open-ending with Vishnu sitting across Simi for a job interview.
