Liger marked Vijay Deverakonda's debut in Bollywood.
Vijay Deverakonda’s Bollywood debut film Liger was one of the most awaited, till it wasn’t. Mike Tyson being a part of the project raised the excitement level to a new high. The makers also shelled a fortune behind getting the boxer to be a part of the film.
Mike is seen in a cameo appearance in Liger and even for that brief appearance, he was paid a humongous amount. According to reports on Bollywood Hungama, Mike himself charged Rs. 25 crores for his role.
The report further states that while Vijay and even producer Karan Johar were not too keen on bringing Mike on board, director Puri Jagannadh was convinced with the idea. Thus, eventually, Liger saw Mike in a small role.
It is being reported that after Liger’s disastrous Box Office, Puri might compensate the loss. How and when are still unclear. Out of the whole team, distributor Warangai Srinu has suffered immense losses. He acquired the movie’s South rights for as much as Rs. 70 crores.
It is to be noted that Liger has not only performed poorly in the Hindi belt but it is the lowest performing film even in South India, including Hyderabad. Vijay has a huge fan following in Telangana because of his hold on the Telugu film industry but the film is performing poorly even there.
More recently, Charmme Kaur spoke to Free Press Journal about Liger. Her analysis was that nobody could understand the formula to why certain movies work and others don’t. She explained that they waited for more than three years to release Liger and in the process, let other films like RRR and Pushpa: The Rise release first. The co-producer tagged Liger’s failure as ‘depressing’ because the team were extremely confident that the movie ‘was made for a theatrical experience.’
Liger stars Ananya Panday as the female lead. The movie is about a boxer challenging his father to a match.
