House of the Dragon Season 1

House of the Dragon season 2’s first episode premiered earlier in the day, and it has already brought in some huge surprises. The episode introduced a potential successor to the Iron Throne. You probably might have missed it, because he came in a brief appearance. However, this character will play a huge role ahead. Here’s exploring more of it…

Did you notice Hugh?

Hugh (Kieran Bew), who is a blacksmith that approaches Aegon II Targaryen on the smiths’ payment for weapons, might have appeared in a brief role but will play a large part later. That is, if the makers follow George R. R. Martin’s book Fire and Blood closely.

How will Hugh play an important role?

Hugh will be one of the important dragonriders. In the upcoming seasons, Rhaenyra’s son Jacaerys wants to recruit dragonriders for Dance of the Dragons. That is when Hugh ‘a blacksmith’s bastard’ will come in full display. Hugh and three others succeeded, beating 16 men who died during the trials. Hugh mounted Dragon Vermithor, thus proving his incredible strength.

A little back story - while Vermithor is not the biggest dragon in House of the Dragon (Aemond’s big girl Vhagar is), he’s pretty big. Vermithor is the very dragon who appeared in the first season, and was mounted by Viserys’ predecessor, King Jaehaerys. The others mount dragons Silverwing, Seasmoke and Sheepstealer.

Fight for the throne itself

Hugh, who was a part of Rhaenyra Targaryen’s faithful associates, fought Otto Hightower. Hugh with Vermithor, Jacaerys with his dragon Vermax, and the riders with Silverwing, Seasmoke and Sheepstealer, were a part of the battle.

The interesting bit came from Silverwing’s rider Ulf White and Hugh went against each other. After winning the battle, he fought the war for the Iron Throne. That is where Hugh was killed.

A new episode of House of the Dragon airs on Sunday, 9 pm ET, which means it is available at 6.30 am each Monday. The show is streaming on Jio Cinema.
