Christmas would be incomplete without a miracle. If you are a grown adult in need of some entertainment and magic, Die Hard should most definitely be your Holiday Stream.
"Now I have a machine gun. Ho Ho Ho!" If you know this dialogue, you would definitely know the whole sentiment behind it. If you do, it would be safe to assume that you are well aware why Die Hard is your perfect Christmas watch. For the others who are still newer to the film, Welcome to the party, pal.
A police officer's life comes to a standstill when he goes through a rough patch with his wife and she gets held at gunpoint. The couple attend a Christmas party, unaware about the terror events that are set to unfold soon. It is the perfect opportunity for the officer - Bruce Willis' John McClaine - to show his skills (and swag). If that isn't the little magic you need for Christmas, then the holiday isn't for you.
John has a present for the bad men. He makes sure they know not to mess with him or anybody close to him, even when the situation is not in his favour. In fact, John makes sure to pay the antagonists back, three times more than what they did.
What makes Die Hard so good?
A cop hero and an antagonist who fears nothing. The 1988 film is a classic take on the white and black shades of people. While one looks at how he can save more people, the other finds ways to kill as many as possible to set an example. Despite Die Hard being so simple a story, it has all the elements of a commercial movie. John McClaine and Alan Rickman (who plays Hans Gruber) each have dialogues but of course, our John McClaine takes the cake when it comes to the memorable dialogues. Because, Yippee Kay Yay, motherfucker. That too in the 80s.
Why is it a Christmas watch?
What is your idea of Christmas? Isn't it a time when you believe that all the trouble life puts you through, will get resolved by some magic? That Santa Claus would come and put a smile on your face? John McClaine does just that. He is the magic who solves one of the biggest problems ever - terrorism. He brings fear in the eyes of the antagonist when the evil man realizes he is about to die. He is also the Santa Claus who puts a smile on his wife and kids' faces by being with them eventually. If that isn't the Christmas one needs, then it would rather not be Christmas.
Is the film for everybody?
Die Hard is definitely not a recommended watch for children since it has a lot of violence. However, adults who have a sense of right and wrong, can definitely view the film and enjoy each moment and emotion.
Hans Gruber has his own 'Army of Thieves'.
Every person in Hans' team specializes in something. A black man, Clarence Gilyard, who plays the role of Theo in the film, has his own style. He is a hacker who dares to say, "You didn't bring me along for my charming personality." He can hack into even the toughest of locks, glimpses of which are shown in Die Hard.
While he is a hacker, Karl, played by Alexander Godunov, hunts people down. Others are adept with how the wires attached to the place work. The mission is to gather USD 600 million hidden in a vault in the building.
John's unabashed nature vs everyone.
John is not your typical cop. He believes in justice, no matter what. The character clears that during a dialogue. When one of the attackers reminds him, "You won't hurt me. There are rules for police officers," John replies, "Oh yeah. So my captain keeps telling me." Of course, then John turns the situation in his favour.
He even has the guts to call off a deputy commissioner in charge of the case. John can do that because he is the hero while the deputy's image is ruined on National Television.
The action and the thrilling moments.
Whether it is John jumping off the burning building or shooting from beneath the table, the action and thrill just end with Die Hard. Almost every person, man or woman, is daring in the film. It is what makes the movie a classic and much-loved.
The encounter.
John and Hans' first meeting is quite thrilling. The next time they meet, you know what their characters are all about. With that, there's 'Happy Trails for Hans.'
We hope this Christmas brings you cheers as much as Die Hard does! Merry Christmas in advance!!
