The Bengali children’s fantasy folk tale Hobu Chandra Raja Gobu Chandra Mantri adapted from the classic folklore of the same name by Dakshina Ranjan Mitra is gearing up for its release. Backed by Dev under his banner Dev Entertainment Ventures Private Limited, the film features Saswata Chatterjee, Arpita Chatterjee, and Kharaj Mukherjee, Subhasish Mukherjee and Barun Chanda in key roles. Aniket Chattopadhyay has helmed the film, which has been mounted big, befitting the royal plot premise. Kabir Suman has done the songs.

What is the plot?
The fairy tale is about the benevolent king Hobu Chandra, the king of Bombagarh, played by Saswata Chatterjee, in whose kingdom, peace and prosperity prevail. His prime minister gives him wise counsel for good governance. All’s well in Bombagarh and gets happier when the king gets married to princess Kusumkumari of Chandragarh played by Arpita Chatterjee. The king and queen wish to have a daughter, and it comes true. Every subject is happy under the king’s reign until there comes a strange man Gobu Chandra, played by Kharaj Mukherjee. Now, oppression, exploitation, weapons, and war become a reality there and what happens to the king, queen, their family, and their kingdom forms the crux of the story.

The script has rhymed dialogues and looks to achieve the excellence of Satyajit Ray's cult fantasy films Goopy Gayen Bagha Byne and Hirak Rajar Deshe. The trailer begins with a tribute to late veteran actor Soumitra Chatterjee, his familiar sonorous as the narrator leaving a bittersweet feeling in its wake. The beautiful sets, colourful costumes, and a larger-than-life visual treatment presenting a fairy tale with an allegorical message, that blends comedy, satire, drama and signature songs composed by Kabir Suman present a promising film for the kids especially.
