Nearly 25 years after their collaboration as writers for Good Will Hunting Ben Affleck and Matt Damon reunited as screenwriters for The Last Duel. The best friends and fellow actors have worked together on several projects but this is the second time they have come together as writers. Talking about the reason behind it, Damon clarified that it wasn't the high standards that kept them from writing a movie together.

The actor told E!, "We assumed (writing) would be so time-consuming that we'd never be able to do it." He added that they would find never find time to write another project like Good Will Hunting starring Robin Williams in the lead role which fetched them Best Original Screenplay at the 1998 Academy Awards.

Damon, however, realised that if they just work during hours that they could easily carve out, they could get a lot done.

About co-writing The Last Duel with Affleck, The Martian actor added, "We wrote it faster than we thought we would."

On the other hand, the Argo helmer was all praises for his best friend and said that he grew up with him and have known him forever. Affleck further said, "We're from the same world and place and stayed close."

Meanwhile, the historical drama The Last Duel is directed by Ridley Scott. The film is based on the book of the same name The Last Duel: A True Story of Trial by Combat in Medieval France penned by Eric Jager. While Affleck and Damon adapted the screenplay with Nicole Holofcener.

The Last Duel features Damon, Adam Driver, Jodie Comer and Affleck in the lead roles. The film was premiered at the Venice Film Festival in September this year.

The movie is finally getting a theatrical release on September 15, 2021.
