Maha, starring Hansika in the lead, courted controversy last year when producer Mathiyalagan and director UR Jameel had a tiff over completion of the film. While the former was in talks with a digital platform with regard to its direct-to-OTT release, the latter came up with an allegation that the movie's shooting is incomplete, and that the producer is desperately trying to sell the film off.

There wasn't any update on the movie for almost a year until last month when the team announced that Maha will hit the screens on June 10. However, the project did not make it to the big screens on the announced date.

Now, Mathiyalagan has announced that the film will be released in theatres on July 22. The thriller flick, which is Hansika's 50th movie, witnessed good hype among the trade after Silambarasan was roped in to play an extended cameo in it. Jameel had already expressed disappointment over the pending portions of the actor which the producer conveniently ignored.

Along with the latest announcement on its release date, the producer has also unveiled a new still from the movie featuring both Silambarasan and Hansika. Srikanth and Thambi Ramaiah are others who play pivotal characters in the project.

The film's digital rights have been bagged by aha Tamil a while ago. J Laxman has cranked the camera and Ghibran has composed music for the movie. John Abraham has handled editing while Manimozhian Ramadurai has helmed art direction.

Dinesh Subbarayan and Stunner Sam have choreographed action scenes for Maha which has dance choreography helmed jointly by Sheriff and Gayatri Raguram. Hansika's last outing in Tamil was 100 (streaming on Amazon Prime Video) which was released in 2019. She currently has almost half-a-dozen projects, including a web series with Rajesh, which is likely to stream on Disney+ Hotstar.
