With his acting skills, Sasikumar is now making a mark in the Tamil film industry. But, his first claim to fame was his directorial talent. He made quite an impression in the consciousness of moviegoers worldwide with his 2008 rural drama Subramaniapuram. To mark the movie's 15th anniversary, efforts are underway to give it a big re-release .

"If there's an industry where the mainstream is reinventing constantly and doing more rooted things, it's largely in Tamil Nadu. If you see, the films that are made in Tamil Nadu are about Tamil Nadu. It's about their culture and they do very well," Anurag had said while talking about the influence of Tamil cinema on him.

And he also revealed that he was put to shame by movies like Naan Kadavul and Paruthiveeran that were grounded in the culture and ethos of Tamil Nadu.

"When I saw Subramaniapuram, I felt like I need to get back to my roots. I come from Bamaras and there were so many stories while I was growing up. And when I became a filmmaker, I am making films set in cities. And I am not exploring anything that I have lived with so much. And when I found that three filmmakers, Sasikumar, Bala and Ameer Sultan, from Madurai and they made those films, going back to their roots, it hit me very hard," he had said.

Set in the 1980s, Subramaniapuram explores the heart of a rural backdrop, painting a vivid picture of life in a small town. The film's authenticity lies in its unfiltered depiction of societal norms, emotions, and conflicts that unfold among its characters.

Taking inspiration from Subramaniapuram, Anurag made his critically accliamed Gangs of Wasseypur series.
