Suresh Productions backs 3 small films

Suresh Productions, the iconic banner which enjoys a six-decade legacy in Telugu cinema, has been more active in the distribution space than film production in the recent years. While they co-produced films like Drushyam 2, Narappa and Virata Parvam and Saakini Daakini, the banner is regularly tying up with Asian Cinemas to back Tamil-dubbed films in the Telugu states.

Their last release as distributors was Maamannan’s Telugu version Nayakudu, which didn’t perform well at the ticket window. This week, the banner is distributing as many as 3 films - Her Chapter 1, Hatya, Annapurna Photo Studio. Interestingly, all the films are thrillers set amidst different backdrops and will hit screens on July 21. They’re collaborating with Asian Cinemas for Hatya’s release.

Hatya, starring Vijay Antony, Ritika Singh, Meenakshii Chaudhary, directed by Balaji Kumar, is an investigative thriller narrated from a detective’s perspective. The edgy trailer promises a slick, stylish film full of twists. Her Chapter 1, helmed by debutant Sreedhar Swaraghav, starring Ruhani Sharma unfolds through the lens of a female cop who investigates the death of a young girl.

Annapurna Photo Studio, starring Chaitanya Rao, debutante Lavanya Sahukara, is directed by O Pitta Katha fame Chendu Muddu. The film is a thriller comedy revolving around a middle-aged photographer who’s trapped in an awkward situation, when an acquaintance reenters his life. In terms of publicity, the producers have done an impressive job in creating some interest for the film among the public, thanks to smart promotions and multiple preview shows.

Of the three films, Annapurna Photo Studio will have the edge, given its lighthearted premise, 80s backdrop, music and the technical finesse. Her, the thriller grabbed eyeballs with its trailer and the measured storytelling may work in its favour. Hatya may look like the underdog but can spring a surprise with Vijay Antony’s reach among the masses.
