Kangana Ranaut has been maturing well in her performances over the years. The actress has shown potential and versatility, from playing a sportswoman to a sweet-shop owner and even a mutant. Although she has rubbed many the wrong way with her controversial opinions, her performances make her unforgettable. Here are the top 5 films of the Padma Shri recipient, which showcase her versatility and acting calibre.

1. Queen (Netflix)

The 2013 comedy drama is a slice-of-life film directed by Vikas Bahl and produced by Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane. Starring Kangana Ranaut as Rani Mehra, along with Rajkumar Rao and Lisa Haydon in the leading roles, the film follows the sheltered, sweet and innocent Rani’s solo honeymoon after her fiance deserts her two days before their wedding. What ensues is a journey of self-discovery, self-love, and joie de vivre, with Rani gaining experience and confidence upon seeing the world.

2. Tanu Weds Manu Returns (Jio Cinema, Prime Video)

The 2015 romantic comedy sequel to Tanu Weds Manu (2011) has Kangana Ranaut effortlessly juggling double roles. One as Tanu Sharma, the wife of R. Madhavan’s character doctor Manu, and the other as Kusum, a Haryanvi athlete in college. As both the characters belong to different societies, have vastly varying accents and educational backgrounds, along with mannerism and attire, the film is emblematic of the limits to which Kangana Ranaut can push herself to deliver an authentic performance.

3. Fashion (Netflix)

The highly acclaimed Madhur Bhandarkar film had realistic depictions of the highs and lows of the fashion industry in India, especially Mumbai. Though the film stars Priyanka Chopra, Kangana Ranaut, and Mugdha Godse in the leading roles, Ranaut’s portrayal of the supermodel Shonali makes her stand out and grab attention. Shonali was one of the most sought-after showstoppers, who suffered a huge fall from grace and got embroiled in arrogance, drugs, toxic, abusive men, and unemployment, to the point of no return.

4. Judgementall Hai Kya (Zee5)

Directed by Prakash Kovelamudi and produced by Ekta Kapoor, this 2019 film stars Rajkummar Rao and Kangana Ranaut in the leading roles. A mystery thriller with an intriguing psychological twist, Ranaut plays the character of Bobby, an oddly obsessive woman with some mental disabilities due to a traumatic childhood accident. The less revealed about the film, the better, as this thrilling, twisted film deserves a watch for more reasons than Kangana herself.
