Filmmaker Rathna Kumar, who made his directorial debut with Meyaadha Maan successfully a few years ago, made heads turn with the announcement of his third venture Gulu Gulu. The first look and teaser of the Santhanam-starrer evoked interest among the audience because of its uniqueness.
The movie, which was released on July 29, opened to mixed response from critics and the audience. Unlike the expectations, the film didn't have adequate comedy, which was one of the reasons why it didn't perform at the box office. The unengaging screenplay rubbed salt into the wound.
Raj Narayanan's Circle Box Entertainment bankrolled Gulu Gulu which has Athulya Chandra playing the female lead in it. Vijay Kartik Kannan and Philomon Raj handled cinematography and editing respectively for the project which has music composed by Santhosh Narayanan.
Namitha, Pradeep Rawat, Mariyam George and Sai Dheena among others essay pivotal roles in the movie which has art direction helmed by Jackie. Udhayanidhi's Red Giant Movies distributed the film across Tamil Nadu. Gulu Gulu was Santhanam's first outing this year.
The film was dropped on Sun NXT on August 27. The digital platform had announced bagging the film's OTT rights before its theatrical release. The movie's story revolves around a travel junkie whose adventure activity creates chaos among his group of friends. How they face never-ending troubles because of his bizarre behaviour and come out of them in a risky manner forms the rest of the story.
The lack of appropriate character detailing and attempts to make black comedy work going haywire are a few other reasons why Gulu Gulu couldn't impress its target audience. Fans of Santhanam have now pinned their hopes on his upcoming two films.
