Gufi Paintal passed away at the age of 79. The actor, best known for his portrayal of Shakuni Mama in BR Chopra’s Mahabharat, died due to age-related health issues. He left for the heavenly abode on the morning of June 5, 2023, after heart failure.

“With profound grief we announce the sad demise of our father Mr Gufi Paintal (Shakuni Mama). He passed away peacefully this morning surrounded by family,” his family confirmed on Monday.

Gufi was hospitalized since May 31. He was unwell for a long time but it got worse after he was admitted to the hospital.

The actor became a household name after portraying the cunning Shakuni Mama in Mahabharat. The show, which originally aired on Doordarshan, was telecast once again during COVID-19 times and once again, the actor came in the spotlight for his performance back in 1988.

Besides acting, Gufi also ventured into direction. His most popular directorial is the movie, Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.

The actor’s collaboration with BR Films wasn’t limited to Mahabharat. He worked as an associate director, casting director and production designer with the team too.

Gufi was the brother of famous actor Kanwarjit Paintal, who is often referred to as Paintal. The actor-comedian is best remembered for playing Salma in Rafoo Chakkar, Guruji in Bawarchi and Budh in Satte Pe Satta. He is still active in the film and TV industry.

Gufi, too, was a popular name in films like his brother. He was a part of Dillagi (1978) and Samrat & Co (2014). The actor had played Akshay Kumar’s uncle in Suhaag.

He is survived by his wife Rekha, brother Paintal, nephew Hiten, son Harry and granddaughter Sara. RIP, Gufi.
