Greta Gerwig, the 40-year-old filmmaker explained that she made the decision to do her own covert fieldwork during her blockbuster film, Barbie's opening weekend in July by hiding in the theater's back during screenings so she could see the audience's response firsthand.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, she recalled this experience at a screen talk on Sunday at the BFI London Film Festival. “I went around to different theaters and sort of stood in the back, and would then also turn up the volume if I felt it wasn’t playing at the perfect level,” she said.
The director then revealed that she also witnessed one woman laugh out at a joke about the Proust Barbie—a particular one-liner she had decided to include in the movie. Greta said that she was pleased to see that this particular audience member understood the joke at this precise moment.

Barbie broke multiple records, earning more than $1.4 billion, becoming the highest-grossing movie of 2023, the highest-grossing movie ever released by Warner Bros. and the highest-grossing movie ever made by a single female filmmaker. The film stars Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken. The cast of the film also includes names like America Ferrera, Dua Lipa, Emerald Fennell, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, and Will Ferrell.
Greta Gerwig's upcoming project
When Greta was asked about her upcoming projects, she said, "I’m in the writing process, and it’s hard because I’m having recurring nightmares.”
Gerwig had a similar opinion in July when speaking about another planned project in which she would be in charge of directing two Narnia films, which would be based on the renowned British novelist C.S. Lewis' well-known The Chronicles of Narnia book series.
