Kannada filmmaker Indrajit Lankesh returns to cinema after a brief hiatus is with a film that marks the acting debut of his son, Samarjit Lankesh. Called Gowri, the film, which Indrajit has been tight-lipped about, was recently censored and received a clean U certificate, with a run-time of 130 minutes. The film is a home production under their banner, Laughing Buddha Films. It also marks the big screen debut of Saanya Iyer, a popular small screen artiste, who also found fame with Bigg Boss Kannada OTT and Bigg Boss Kannada Season 9.

Gowri release plan

In the last couple of months, Indrajit has been spearheading promotions for the film, considering it is a venture with newcomers and needs that extra push to get audiences to come to theatres. He has now revealed that he is bringing the film to theatres shortly. Earlier today, it was announced that Gowri will be in theatres on August 15.

It joins films like Powder, starring Diganth in the lead, and Golden Star Ganesh’s Krishnam Pranaya Sakhi in the Independence Day box office race to make the most of the long weekend. A Thursday release gives all these films a 4-day window, given that 16th is Varamahalakshmi. The date was earlier not available, as Shivarajkumar’s Bhairathi Ranagal had booked it.

However, the Mufti prequel/sequel is, according to sources, being pushed to September/October, an official confirmation for which is yet to come. There were also rumours that Kiccha Sudeepa was eyeing August 15 for his next, Max, but yet again, no official word from the team has been forthcoming.

Meanwhile, Gowri, according to Indrajit, is a tribute to his late sister Gauri Lankesh, and, although it is based on a true story, it is not about her. The filmmaker has been very reluctant to share glimpses from the film so far and while a trailer is expected closer to the release, it is unlikely to shed much light on the subject. All that the director does say is that Gowri is his best film to date.
