It is heard that the singer succumbed to age-related complications. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed grievance at the news. She said, “Anup Ghoshal’s death caused irreparable damage to the music world. I express my heartfelt condolences to his relatives and fans.”
Anup Ghoshal sang in Satyajit Ray’s movies Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne and Heerak Rajar Deshe. His voice made those songs immortal. The singer was raised in a musical environment and his mother Labanya Ghoshal was his inspiration. He was acclaimed for Nazrulgeeti and Shyama Sangeet. He also sang in films In both Bengali and Hindi. His song in Tapan Sinha's Sagina Mahato became immortal. The song Tujhse Naraj Nahi in the film Masoom became popular because of him. He also sang in Bhojpuri and Assamese films.
Anup Ghoshal later joined the TMC. He contested from Uttarpara in the 2011 assembly election and won. However, he gradually shifted away from politics. West Bengal government awarded Anup Ghoshal with Nazrul Smriti Purashkar in 2011 and Sangeet Maha Samman in 2013.
