If watching films is in your checklist for the New Year’s weekend, Malayalam cinema has plenty of choices for fans of all genres. The Christmas weekend had Basil Joseph and Darshana Rajendran’s Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey, Priya Prakash Varrier’s 4 Years, Aparna Balamurali’s Ini Utharam and Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Kaapa. If you have caught up with all those films, then don’t worry, there are enough big Malayalam releases – both on OTT as well as theatres – to keep you entertained this weekend.

Gold

Director Alphonse Puthren’s comeback directorial revolves around a mobile-shop owner who wakes up to an unusual predicament one day – a pick-up truck that is abandoned in front of his house. How he gets the cops to remove the vehicle from his property and the consequent incidents that happen after he discovers the content in the truck form the plot of this film, starring Prithviraj, Nayanthara, Lalu Alex, Shammi Thilakan and Baburaj.
Djinn

Soubin Shahir and Santhy Balachandran’s much-delayed entertainer revolves around a man whose mental balance gets affected due to the stress that he has to encounter. The film, which also has Shine Tom Chacko and Sharafudheen, marks director Sidharth Bharathan’s most commercial film yet and is scripted by Kali fame Rajesh Gopinadhan.
Malikappuram

Unni Mukundan, Saiju Kurup and child artistes Devanandha and Sripad star in this family entertainer that is about the relationship between an eight-year-old girl and her superhero, Ayyappan. Set against the backdrop of Sabarimala pilgrimage, the film, directed by Vishnu Sasi Shankar and scripted by Abhilash Pillai, has action, emotions and a bit of a religious flavour to keep the audience entertained.
Kakkippada

Starring Niranj Maniyanpilla Raju, Sujith Sankar and Appani Sarath, the Shebi Chowgath-directorial revolves around the professional and personal lives of the cops. The investigative thriller, which deals with the task of eight cops to bring a suspect to the court to testify, highlights the trauma that police officers encounter while carrying out their duties, and how they still carry on.
Nalla Samayam

Oru Adaar Love and Happy Wedding director Omar Lulu’s latest directorial, which has Irshad and a bunch of newcomers, is a stoner comedy that deals with a series of hilarious incidents that happen once its characters are under the influence of drugs. Meera Madhu, Nora Johan, Nandana Sahadevan, Gayathri Shankar and Suha are also part of its cast.
