The Alphonse Puthren directorial will be releasing in over 1300 screens on December 1
Prithviraj Sukumaran and Nayanthara-starrer Gold have already done record pre-release business for a Malayalam movie this year. Sources from the team say that the movie has already grossed Rs 50 crore from advance bookings, OTT and satellite rights as well as its overseas rights.
In fact, the makers of the film, Prithviraj Productions and Magic Frames, are going all out to ensure that the movie also mints money at the box office, with it releasing in over 1,300 theatres on December 1 worldwide. The first day will see 6,000-plus shows for the Alphonse Puthren directorial, a record for a Malayalam movie post pandemic.
In fact, Gold will also be the first ever Malayalam movie to release in Israel and Iceland. The makers have announced that the movie will be released in 25+ European countries including UK, France, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands, Denmark, Moldova and Estonia.
The film is already the biggest release for a Prithviraj-starrer and has done the most pre-release business for a movie featuring the Jana Gana Mana actor. The star, who is also co-producing the movie, will be looking to end the year on a high after two out of his three theatrical releases – Jana Gana Mana and Kaduva – went on to become superhits this year.
Prithviraj kicked off the year with his second directorial Bro Daddy, which was a direct-to-OTT release on Disney+ Hotstar. He is set to work with Mohanlal again in Empuraan, the sequel of Lucifer, next year. The upcoming movie will also benefit from the big market that Gold will establish.
Incidentally, Lucifer led the charge in terms of expanding Malayalam cinema’s markets overseas, till the pandemic pulled those efforts back. With Gold and upcoming big budget films such as Dulquer Salmaan’s King of Kotha, Mohanlal’s Empuraan and Mammootty’s Christopher, the industry will be hoping to resume their efforts in full swing.
