More than 6 months after its phased theatrical release that started in Japan, then went to the US and, subsequently, to a few countries like Australia, New Zealand, Austria, Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland, Poland, Spain and finally the UK, the much-awaited monster movie – Godzilla Minus One – is finally in India, albeit without a big screen outing.

The hit film, written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki is now available to stream in India on Netflix. It appeared on the streamer without prior notice on June 1, 2024. Godzilla Minus one is now streaming with Japanese, English, Hindi and Tamil audio options, while subtitles are in English and Japanese only.

Enjoy 35+ OTTs like ZEE5, LionsgatePlay, Ullu, SunNXT, SonyLIV, Fancode and 250+ Live TV channels at just ₹99.

The film, made at a budget of USD 10-12 million, is reported to have made USD 115 million during its theatrical outing, a figure that could have been much higher if it had a worldwide simultaneous release. At the time, those who had the privilege of watching Godzilla’s rampage on the big screen had hailed the film as the best movie of 2023 and the greatest in the Godzilla franchise.

Godzilla Minus One X Review – Netizens hail the new Godzilla movie as the best movie of 2023!

It became the highest grossing Japanese film of the year and surpassed Shin Godzilla as the most successful Japanese Godzilla movie. Godzilla Minus One was widely praised for its visual effects, direction, screenplay and characters all of which is credited to Takashi Yamazaki, its music and social commentary.

Critics particularly called out the fact that despite its low budget and relatively unknown star cast, Godzilla Minus One achieved that Hollywood’s bloated monsterverse productions could not, simply because it had a compelling story. Unlike the more recent Hollywood productions, which made Godzilla and King Kong seem like giant pets for the human cast, here is a film in which Godzilla is back to being the menace he is meant to be.

Godzilla Minus One takes place in the final days of World War II, as Japan begins rebuilding itself after the horrors of the two atomic bomb drops in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. A period drama, the film follows a former Kamikaze pilot Koichi Shikishima (Ryunosuke Kamiki) who encounters Godzilla on a Japanese outpost island.
