The supernatural comedy Ghostbusters Frozen Empire, the sequel to Ghostbusters Afterlife (2021), released in theatres in India on April 27, long after it came out in the US. The film opened to poor reviews, but is, reportedly, a box office success at USD 200 million collections. Directed by Gil Kenan, who co-wrote it with Jason Reitman, Ghostbusters Frozen Empire picks up three years after the events of Afterlife. The film is now available on OTT, albeit on rental basis only, with Amazon Prime Video presenting it in the store, for Rs 249 only.

The film stars Carrie Coon, McKenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard, Paul Rudd, Celeste O’Connor, Logan Kim, Bill Murray, Dan Ackroyd, Annie Potts, Ernie Hudson, Kumail Namjiani, Patton Oswalt, among others. The film focuses on McKenna Grace’s Phoebe Spengler, and her new friendship with the ghost of a girl, Melody, who’d died when she was 16. Melody, as it turns out, is seeking the afterlife, which she’s promised by an ancient evil spirit, Garraka, provided she gets Phoebe to do his bidding. Can the ghostbusters bandy together and save the world from Garraka’s death chill, while also ensuring they are not shut down as an agency?

Ghostbusters Frozen Empire is the fifth film in the franchise and the fourth in mainline instalment, which came out in time for the 40thanniversary of the first film. Frozen Empire was initially meant to be directed by Jason Reitman, who’d made Afterlife, but later Kenan took over. The film released after the franchise’s co-creator Ivan Reitman (Jason’s father) passed away; he’s credited as producer.

Director Kenan has been quoted as saying that multiple ideas have been floated for future instalments, with the mini-Pufts likely to get a storyline, given that they featured in a post-credit scene.
