In an interview with an international publication, the fantasy novelist claimed that he wasn't that involved in the series' final seasons.
Following the conclusion of Game of Thrones after two years, the show's creator, George RR Martin, revealed that he was kept out of the loop for the later seasons of the original HBO series based on his work.
According to Deadline, the fantasy novelist claimed in an interview with the New York Times that he wasn't involved in the series' final seasons. Seasons 1 and 2 of Game of Thrones focused primarily on the first two books in George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series, Game of Thrones and A Clash of Kings. The third and fourth seasons correspond to the third book in the series, A Storm of Swords.
The TV show also incorporates elements from the next two books, A Feast For Crows and A Dance With Dragons. Martin's written output was dwarfed by Seasons 7 and 8 of the TV show. Martin has stated that when he completes the novels, the endings will most likely differ from how the TV series ended.
"By Season 5 and 6, and certainly by Season 7 and 8, I was pretty much out of the loop," Martin admitted. Why? "I'm not sure—you should ask (showrunners) Dan and David," referring to Daniel Weiss and David Benioff, the showrunners behind Game of Thrones.
Many fans panned the show's final season, claiming that it was too short and that they were disappointed with how things ended. Martin later attempted to reassure fans by saying his books would end "totally differently," according to the New York Post.
Martin is now working on the show's upcoming prequel, House of the Dragon, which takes place 200 years before Game of Thrones.
"George has been a really valuable resource for us in this process," said HBO's chief content officer Casey Bloys. Emma D'Arcy plays Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, Matt Smith plays Prince Daemon Targaryen, Rhys Ifans plays Otto Hightower, and Olivia Cooke plays Alicent Hightower in House of the Dragon. The Sea Snake, Lord Corlys Velaryon, will be played by Steve Toussaint, and King Viserys I will be played by Paddy Considine.
House of the Dragon will premiere on HBO and HBO Max on August 21, and on Disney+Hotstar in India.
