Ukrainian filmmaker Dar Gai had lived in the country’s capital city of Kyiv for 22 years
Europe is currently witnessing one of the most devastating crisis due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. Ukrainian filmmaker Dar Gai, who served as the intimacy director on Deepika Padukone’s film Gehraiyaan, recently opened up about the crisis and the impact it had on her family.
Gai was born in Ukraine’s capital city Kyiv, having lived there for 22 years. In an interview with the Times of India, Gai said that her family had made attempts to leave the country but could not because of how hectic things were, with scores of people trying to escape at the same time. They had instead made their way to a village, putting some distance between them and the capital city.
Gai also talked about how courageous her elderly grandmother had been, the latter proclaiming that she wanted to stay back and ‘fight’ to protect her country. The filmmaker also had family who were still stuck in dangerous parts of the country, still searching for a way to make it back to their homes safely.
Gai had also spoken about how some of her friends and family had also taken the decision not to leave, staying back and deciding not to ‘give up’. Gai had told News9 how painful it had been for her to have to stay away from her loved ones, even though she was trying to keep in constant touch with them as much as she could.
Gai had left Ukraine when she was given an opportunity to direct plays at a school in Gwalior. The filmmaker, who also taught screenwriting, had helmed two films in 2018,Teen Aur Aadha and Namdev Bhau: In Search of Silence.
