Gehraiyaan: Director Shakun Batra opens up about the OTT release of the Deepika Padukone starrer

Gehraiyaan, also starring Siddhant Chaturvedi, Ananya Panday and Dhairya Karwa, was expected to hit the big screen

Gehraiyaan has taken over the internet within a few days of its announcement and has become one of the most anticipated films of the season. As the film is nearing its release, director Shakun Bhatra speaks about his decision to release the Deepika Padukone starrer on an OTT platform.

Though Bhatra wanted to hold the film until the COVID-19 situation improved in the country, he felt the urgent need to put it out. “I always set out to make this film for a mature audience, and that is already there on OTT platforms,” said the director, as quoted by Hindustan Times. He also added that if there is a good story, it will definitely connect with the audience, regardless of how and where it is watched.

When he was asked to classify the genre of the movie, he said it is tough to categorise. He called it ‘domestic noir’, and said how he is interested in daily lives and to film the same. He also revealed that the film does have some thrilling elements too.

As reported earlier, the movie will deal with the complexities of relationships. Talking more into this, the director said that he finds family dynamics as an interesting muse for storytelling. He thinks that the past or the history would make the story interesting and when we make stories about people who we recently met, there is an absence of history. Thus, he finds characters sharing a common past or background more worthy and interesting for viewing, which he affirmed are his personal thoughts.

Gehraiyaan stars Deepika Padukone, Siddhant Chaturvedi, Ananya Panday and Dhairya Karwa. The movie was expected to hit the big screen. However, the makers later decided to release it on Amazon Prime Video. Gehraiyaan will premiere on February 11, 2022.
