Ganavi Laxman: After Vedha, everyone thought I will be flooded with offers, but that didn’t happen
Ganavi Laxman makes her Telugu debut this week with Rudrangi

Kannada actress Ganavi Laxman, who got her big break last year when she was paired with Century Star Shivarajkumar in Vedha, has just made her Telugu film debut. Ganavi has a pivotal role in Rudrangi, which also stars Jagapati Babu, Vimala Raman and Mamta Mohan and held her own in a role that’s got her widespread appreciation. And although Rudrangi comes nearly 7 months after Vedha, Ganavi tells us that it is not a film she bagged because of her performance in the latter. “In fact, I was shooting for Rudrangi and Vedha simultaneously. Both the films were offered to me around the same time, but there was a delay from team Vedha, and I signed up for Rudrangi. I wanted to be a part of Vedha also, though, because I saw myself of Pushpa, I figured out a way to manage my dates for both projects. I would fly to Hyderabad for Rudrangi and then come back and head straight to the set of Vedha. It was hectic, but in the process, I got two beautiful films,” says the actress.

The time management apart, doing two vastly different roles was also challenging for Ganavi. “In Rudrangi, I played a 20-something, innocent character, Bhujamma, whereas Pushpa is older and rough. But since both films are set in the 60s, at first glance, they may seem similar. After two back-to-back period films, I don’t think I will do another one anytime soon,” she says.

The last 6-7 months, though, have been quite frustrating for Ganavi, as she waits patiently for a good project to take up next. “After Vedha came out, everyone thought I would be flooded with offers. But I was prepared for a situation where that wouldn’t be the case also. I knew that after Vedha, smaller films, newbie teams, etc. would not be offered to me. The general perception would be that I will be not do such films anymore; my remuneration would have shot up, etc. Honestly, I don’t know how people have perceived that character, Pushpa. Even though I have done great work in Vedha, there is a massive slow-down. I have had a few narrations, but since I have a certain vision of what I want to do next, I have not taken up anything yet. I don’t see the point in taking up everything coming my way. Also, it does not make sense to do the same kind of role as the one in Vedha,” says Ganavi.

Being typecast continues to be an issue, it appears. Won’t it be boring for audiences seeing the same thing over and over again? “Forget audiences; I will be bored if I have to do characters of a similar shade. Back in the day, if a heroine was liked for doing a certain kind of role, it was acceptable for her to keep doing that. Today, that is not the case,” she reasons.
