Fifty Shades Of Grey Still

Actors suffering the heat of the audience for playing a character is a trend that the world hopped on to as soon as the connectivity and the internet were both introduced to them. Where is the line that says they are just actors playing fictional/written characters and that is not their real self? Most recently, it was House Of The Dragon actor Fabien Frankel who had to switch off the comments section on his Instagram handle. But he was not the first, of course. Actors have been through worse, but no one deserves this. There was also a point when Jamie Dornan suffered a similar incident after he chose to play Christian Grey in Fifty Shades Of Grey. The actor had to run away and shut himself off to get over the hate that was coming his way and also towards the makers. Did you know?

Jamie Dornan Had To Disappear?

Well, we all remember the mixed reactions that the makers of Fifty Shades Of Grey had suffered back in the day for adapting a novel that was already the talk of the town for its content. It had offended many for the portrayal, and that did reach the makers and the actors of the movies. Jamie Dornan, who has been in the news lately for Belfast and The Tourist has been associated with the franchise wherever he goes. But there was also a time when he was ridiculed for playing Mr. Grey. Read on to know everything you should about the same.

In an interview with The Guardian in early 2024, Jamie Dornan revealed how the hate and ridicule just intensified with the release of the first film, and here they were planning to make two more. The actor went on to reveal how director Sam Taylor-Johnson and husband Aaron Taylor-Johnson both offered him a countryside home as a refuge to disappear for a while. “I was coming off the back of career-altering reviews for The Fall and Bafta nominations and all of this sort of madness … and then I was brought to just ridicule, almost,” Dornan said.

While the box office reception was indeed the validation that minimized the pain, it still affected him. “They [the Taylor-Johnsons] let us have their place in the country and we hid there for a while and just shut ourselves from the world for a bit and then came out the other side,” he says.

“It was a strange thing because then you are like: ‘Well, there is a bit of ridicule here, yet I’m now contractually doing two more of them’ – and knowing there would be more of that damnation to come,” Dornan says. “And even now, when I’ve just had very glowing reviews for recent work, there wouldn’t be many of them that don’t mention Fifty Shades. A lot of reviews are like: ‘He’s great, but lest we forget, here’s when he wasn’t great.’ Give us a chance!”
