After Justin Lin’s departure from Fast X Louis Leterrier, known for The Incredible Hulk and the first two Transporter movies, is going to take over as director.

According to Variety Universal Pictures hired Leterrier within a week of Lin leaving the project, which went on the floors on April 20. Lin has co-written the movie with Dan Mazeau and is still attached as a producer.

Leterrier has extensive experience in helming action movies and has even helmed Jet Li’s Unleashed. He has also helmed Clash of the Titans and Now You See Me. Leterrier has worked on Netflix projects like The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance and the popular French-language heist series Lupin.

Variety notes that this is a project that will require Leterrier to be on his toes because he is taking over a project that has already been fully envisioned by Lin. Even in Lin’s absence the movie has begun work with Vin Diesel, Jason Momoa and Charlize Theron already on set. Universal has halted work on the main unit but the second unit in the UK is still actively shooting.

In April, Lin announced his “difficult decision” to exit from Fast X of which he has been a part of for a long time. He added that as a child of Asian immigrants he takes pride in building one of the “most diverse franchise in movie history.”

It is now being reported that a major disagreement between Lin and Diesel led to the former’s exit from the project. Sources close to the development told The Hollywood Reporter that the primary reason was Diesel’s involvement in the writing process to “polish the dialogue.” “Justin finally had enough and said, ‘This movie is not worth my mental health,’” a source told THR.

However, a Universal spokesperson said that any creative differences Lin had was not with Diesel or any other cast and crew member but with the studio.

Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris and Sung Kang also star in Fast X. The movie is slated to be out on May 19, 2023.
