“You will always be superman,” wrote one fan on micro-blogging site Twitter as Henry Cavill broke the news of him not returning as Superman.

On Thursday, the British actor announced his exit as Superman with a heartbreaking statement. Cavill wrote about his meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran and announced that it's bad news for his die-hard fans across the globe.

The actor started by writing, "I have just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran, and it's sad news, everyone. I will, after all, not be returning as Superman."

Cavill made a cameo in Black Adam, which was Dwayne Johnson's first DC movie. This showed that he will be back as Superman in future movies. However, the actor wrote, "After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn't the easiest, but that's life. The changing of the guard is something that happens."

The Witcher actor further stated, "I respect that James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck and the happiest of fortunes."

While getting emotional, Cavill added, "For those who have been by my side through the years... we can mourn for a bit, but then we must remember... Superman is still around. Everything he stands for still exists, and the examples he sets for us are still there!"

He concluded by writing, "My turn to wear the cape has passed, but what Superman stands for never will. It's been a fun ride with you all, onwards and upwards."

Fans, quite understandably, are not happy with this executive call. Here’s a compilation of what heartbroken fans have written about the beloved actor’s exit from the franchise:

"You will always be superman".

"I’m so sorry man. This is legitimately heartbreaking to read".

"It's so sad, poor guy. he was so happy to be back as superman, they've done him so dirty!"

"That is disappointing, you were my favorite actor to see, ever since Monte Cristo. No Witcher, No Superman! Just why!? Another change, just to make them (DC) get more money. I'm done with DC, done with Marvel. Going back to reading books."

"Not going to watch any Warner Bros movies in theatres from now onwards. Poor executive decisions one after another."

"You’re too good for dc come to marvel".

"Never going to watch any DC movies".

"Go to MARVEL!!! haha".

Other fans, with a heavy heart, have accepted his exit and said their goodbyes, with one writing, “You were an incredible superman, Henry, and your version was the basis on my take on the character in the comics. Here's to your next Adventure! Long live Superman!”
