Fahadh Faasil is gearing up for his first Malayalam theatrical release since the pandemic. The star, who has won national attention during the pandemic through his OTT films, will have his first release in the language with debutant filmmaker Sajimon Prabhakar’s survival thriller Malayankunju.

There were reports that the movie, which is scripted by CU Soon and Malik filmmaker Mahesh Narayanan, would be a direct-to-OTT release on Amazon Prime Video on Onam. However, refuting these reports, the makers of the film on Friday had announced that Malayankunju will hit theatres on July 22.

Fahadh plays a rural youth who repairs electronics devices in the movie, which also has Rajisha Vijayan and Indrans in pivotal roles. The movie revolves around a man trapped in a landslide and also marks AR Rahman’s first project in Malayalam after a gap of 30 years.

The ace composer was also the reason for the movie’s delay. A source close to the team had earlier told OTTplay that they had been awaiting Rahman’s compositions for the film for almost six months. The maestro had finally sent these two weeks ago, after which the team had completed its post-production.

The source had also confirmed that the initial plan of the makers was to release the movie on Amazon Prime Video. However, various reasons including Fahadh’s injury on sets, the second lockdown and the Omicron threat had delayed the film, causing the makers to change their plans.

The July 22 release for Malayankunju would mean that the film will clash with Nivin Pauly and Asif Ali’s Mahaveeryar, which is directed by Abrid Shine. The latter, which is a time-travel fantasy satire, is set to hit theatres on July 21. Other releases in the coming weeks include Soubin Shahir’s Ilaveezhapoonchira, Anoop Menon’s Padma, Dinoy Poulose’s Vishudha Mejo and Shane Nigam’s Bermuda.
