The thriller is set to drop on the streamer on June 16
In cinema, never assume a character is dead unless you’ve actually seen the body. Three years ago, when Chris Hemsworth played Tyler Rake, a black-market mercenary and former Australian Army Special Air Service Regiment agent in Extraction, the film ended with his character being fatally wounded and falling off a bridge. Released directly on Netflix, the Sam Hargrave directorial that is based on the graphic novel Ciudad by Ande Parks, Joe Russo, Anthony Russo, Fernando León González, and Eric Skillman, was streamed by 99 million households, making it one of the platforms most successful films.
Not surprisingly, the streamer commissioned a second movie in the franchise shortly after, which is now set to drop on the platform on June 16. Earlier today, Netflix revealed the trailer of Extraction 2, with Chris as Tyler alive and kicking and ready to jump right back into the thick of action. The trailer has glimpses of Tyler's path to recovery, as well as his new mission, to protect a gangster's family from certain death after a hit squad is out to get them.
Sharing the trailer on social media, Chris had written, “Here we go! #Extraction2 trailer smacking you right between the eyes. Enjoy this 2 mins of madness before Extraction 2 drops June 16th, only on @netflix.”
Like the original, Extraction 2 is also high on action, with the sequences bigger and better this time around, which, netizens believe should give the film a shot at glory on the big screen. Extraction came out at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, necessitating a direct-to-OTT release, but the sequel, they reckon, should make it to theatres. Comments ranged from, “Release this masterpiece in theatres”, “A 21-minute straight shot deserves the big screen”, “Wish this was a theatre release to watch it on the big screen” to “Extraction 2 deserves to be in theatres”.
It might not be feasible for Netflix to heed this fan request in the last minute, but if it does, audiences are in for a treat.
