Exclusive! Yamini Yagnamurthy: There aren't much similarities between Rocky and Saani Kaayidham

Yamini with Arun Matheswaran

Arun Matheswaran's Saani Kaayidham, which dropped directly on Amazon Prime Video earlier this month, is still receiving praises from several quarters for its impressive technical aspects and performances from lead actors. Yamini Yagnamurthy, who handled cinematography for the project, is elated with the response she has been receiving ever since the movie was released.

There are movie buffs who felt that Saani Kaayidham and the director's debut outing Rocky share similarities in terms of visuals and locations. However, Yamini noted that the two films are poles apart except for the location where both the stories happen.

In a chat with OTTplay, she said, "I think the only similarity is with regard to the geography. Both the movies have stories that take place in isolated places. That common aspect has nothing to do with similarity; I would say it's the style of Arun's filmmaking. Right from the writing part, he has a clear idea about how his film should be."

Quiz her on the similarity with respect to usage of black and white images in both the films, she said it was unavoidable as both her and Arun are huge fans of monochrome images. "The advantage of using black and white images is that it is easy to hold the attention of viewers without any deviations. I was glad to know that both Arun and I had a liking for monochrome shots," she said.

On the numerous long shots and absence of other characters in frames apart from lead actors, Yamini added that it was a purposeful decision to bring the focus entirely on them.

She said, "It was often difficult to compose shots with no other characters in the background. But when that was the primary requirement of the story, we had to pull it off."
