Indrajith Sukumaran has a long list of police roles lined up this year. He will kick that off with director Vysakh’s Night Drive, which also has Anna Ben and Roshan Mathew, as part of the cast of the film that is set to hit theatres on March 11.

Vysakh tells OTTplay that he had a clear reason for casting Indrajith as a cop again, despite both of them being aware that it has done similar roles of late. “We didn’t cast him because it was a cop role. His character becomes the turning point in the story, and in the lives of the characters played by Anna and Roshan,” says the director.

The director says that since the entry of Indrajith’s character in the film, he “becomes the core of every pivot the story takes”. “For that reason, I didn’t have the courage to cast a relative newcomer and experiment. Night Drive’s strength depended on the actor who played Benni Moopen. I wanted someone experienced, on whose hands the role would be safe, and that’s how I approached Indrajith,” the Pulimurugan director explains.

The filmmaker also tells us that Indrajith too was initially hesitant about taking up another police character in the film, scripted by Abhilash Pillai.

“But as far as I was concerned, a police officer’s role doesn’t just mean wearing the khaki. His character in Night Drive is well-defined in terms of how his past influences his current decisions. So, he has his own identity and emotions that work whether he is in his uniform or not. There are a lot of differences in terms of his actions, activities and behaviour that go beyond his profession, and that’s what sets this character apart,” says Vysakh, who had earlier worked with the actor in the 2016 film Cousins.
