It is interesting to note that in the recent past, actor Vikrant Massey has extensively explored the crime and suspense thriller genre in multiple films.
In the last couple of years, the actor has starred in films like Haseen Dillruba, Love Hostel, Forensic, and Criminal Justice.
In an exclusive conversation with OTTplay, he reveals how research, statistics, and data play a big role in his choosing projects for OTT releases.
Asked what fascinates him about the crime-thriller genre, Vikrant said, "As an actor, I see huge potential to perform and tap into emotions that I haven't been able to in daily life in such projects. Also, I believe that we all have a voyeuristic side to us, which is why so many reality shows are running successfully. We love knowing what our neighbours are up to and gossiping about it. I must mention that statistics also play an important role in why so many crime thrillers are made, especially on OTT platforms."
Vikrant added, "I love playing such parts as an actor, and according to data, audiences love watching crime thrillers on OTT platforms, be it in English, Hindi, or any other language. So, I try to do at least one crime drama every now and then."
Since the actor has played a range of characters, we asked him about the common factor that he has observed among crime stories.
Vikrant said, "I am still trying to figure out human possibilities. Human beings are fascinating creatures. When it comes to crime, both the victim and the perpetrator are interesting. Even though it looks like there is a pattern behind every crime, at times it also looks like there is no pattern."
Elaborating further, the actor said, "If we look at the crimes in cities, where youngsters from well-to-do families indulge in crime, we always wonder why. We assume that most criminal activities are committed by those who are poverty-stricken. But in an urban, rich family where a youngster has everything he needs to live a comfortable life, why does he turn to crime? So, it is a complicated matter."
Vikrant is the host of the show Crimes Aaj Kal, which is available to stream on Amazon miniTV.
