Exclusive! Saiju Kurup’s Antakshari is a unique crime-thriller that will surprise the audience: Vipin Das

Drishyam director Jeethu Joseph is also collaborating with the makers of the film, which will release directly on Sony LIV

When director Jeethu Joseph, who has mastered the genre of crime thrillers with films such as Drishyam and Detective, decides to back a film after watching its preview, the movie must have something going for it. That’s exactly what’s happened with Mudhugauv director Vipin Das’ upcoming movie Antakshari, which has Saiju Kurup in the lead.

The upcoming crime thriller, which is set to release directly on Sony LIV, had Jeethu come onboard in its final stages. On how the filmmaker became a part of Antakshari, Vipin tells OTTplay, “Jeethu ettan had heard the script in 2016-17 and said he would like to produce it. But then nothing happened after that as both of us became busy with other projects.”

However, after the first lockdown in 2020, Vipin says, he thought there was “a space for such a film”. “That’s when Saiju chettan, the film’s producers Sulthan Brothers and I got together to make Antakshari. After completing the movie, we showed it to Jeethu chettan and he liked it a lot. He said he wanted to be part of the film too and will help in the marketing, and that’s how he came onboard,” explains the filmmaker.

The movie has Saiju playing a circle inspector. “It’s a proper commercial film in which Saiju chettan plays the protagonist. Even though he has played a titular character recently, this movie focuses entirely on his role and it will showcase one of his best performances. I believe it will be a milestone in Saiju chettan’s career,” says the director.

Further on the film’s genre, Vipin says, “The movie’s plot is connected to the game of antakshari and has all the elements of a crime thriller. Just like that unexpected blend, it has a content that would surprise the audience.”

Antakshari, which also has Sudhy Kopa, Shabareesh, Vijay Babu, Priyanka Nair and a bunch of relative newcomers, is expected to release in April on Sony LIV.
