Actress-turned politician Saayoni Ghosh is on cloud nine. The actress who played Bimala Ray (based on the character of Satyajit Ray’s wife Bijoya Ray) in Anik Dutta’s Aparajito has been busy visiting halls and attending promotional activities.
While talking exclusively to OTTPlay, the actress said, “We all knew that this is going to be a great film. We also thought that people would love it. However, the response that we got is beyond all our expectations. Honestly, I thought the film would be appreciated only by a niche audience and film buffs. In reality, the film seemed to have worked for everybody.”
Talking about the success of Aparajito, she said, “We saw a period when the Bengali audience became indifferent towards our films. That was a sad phase. Aparajito literally brought the audience back to the theatre. This is not the first time I am working with Anik Da. By now, I understand what he wants from the characters. He is a meticulous director.”

Anik is also very pleased with her work. “For me, the creative fit is the most important aspect of casting. Saayoni fitted the character perfectly and hence I took no time in casting her for this role,” he said.
Aparajito is still running successfully in theatres. Besides West Bengal, the film is also running in other states, including Maharashtra, Karnataka, Odisha, Assam, Delhi, Gujarat and others. The film was released in the UAE and Australia on May 26 and May 27 respectively.

Meanwhile, Saayoni has been working in Indraadip Dasgupta’s Uttoran which also features Ankush, Kaushik Ganguly, Rwitobroto Mukherjee and Debesh Chattopadhyay in the key roles. “ID (aka Indraadip) knows what he wants. He does his job quietly. I play the character of a nurse – more precisely, the apprentice of a doctor, played by Kaushikda. It is a layered character that has a lot of history. I have never worked in anything like this before,” she said.
