Based on William Shakespeare’s Hamlet: The Prince Of Denmark, Bratya Basu penned his famous play Hemlat: The Prince Of Garanhata in 2006. Later the play was staged by Ballygunge Swapnasuchona. Meanwhile, Raajhorshee De, who has recently recreated Shakespeare’s Macbeth in Mayaa, is all geared up to bring Hemlat to the big screen. Ritwick Chakraborty will be seen as Hemlat, while Srabanti Chatterjee may play Ophelia. The character of Claudius may be portrayed by Kaushik Ganguly.

Hemlat: The Prince Of Garanhata delves into the neighbourhood of North Kolkata. According to Raajhorshee, he would like to capture the mood of winter in Kolkata and hence, the film may go on the floors in December. “We are almost done otherwise, just the agreement between the makers and the publishers of Bratyada’s play collection needs to be signed,” said the director.
Talking about the cast, Raajhorshee said, “I just have preliminary conversations with Ritwick, Srabanti, and Kaushikda. It has a large star cast and I also have a wishlist. I never worked with Vikram (Chattopadhyay) and he has been doing very well. I would love to have a word with him. I also never worked with Ritudi (Rituparna Sengupta) and I will talk to her as well.”

This will not be the first time Shakespeare’s Hamlet gets on the screen. Besides Vishal Bhardwaj’s iconic Haider, Anjan Dutt made Hemanta in 2016. The film features Parambrata Chatterjee as the protagonist. Besides, Jisshu Sengupta, Payel Sarkar, Gargi Roychowdhury, Saswata Chatterjee, and Shantilal Mukherjee play other pivotal roles.
