The 3D children’s fantasy film, which marks the directorial debut of Mohanlal, also has Guru Somasundaram as part of the cast
Malayalam superstar Mohanlal is all set to wrap up the principal photography of his directorial debut Barroz: The Guardian of D’Gama Treasure. The movie, which first went on floors last April, will finally conclude its shooting in Chennai with a song sequence.
A highly-placed source from the movie exclusively tells OTTplay about the status of the big budget, 3D children’s fantasy that also has Mohanlal in the titular role.
“We have finished shooting the major portions of Barroz,” says the source. “All that’s pending is a title song which will be filmed in Chennai over two days this week. Mohanlal will be shooting on July 26 and 27. With that the entire principal photography of Barroz will be done.”
While the team began shooting last April, the shoot was put on hold due to the second lockdown. By the time, Mohanlal resumed filming again by the end of 2021, several actors including Prithviraj Sukumaran and foreign artistes had opted out due to scheduling conflicts. The team then had to begin all over again. Mohanlal had been busy with the film over the past seven months.
Most of the shoot was done on sets in Kerala, with Goa and Bangkok being the other locations. “The Bangkok schedule was again for a song. It had an animation sequence and it was completed earlier this month,” says the source, adding that the “post production work of the film has already begun”.
The movie has Santosh Sivan cranking the camera. In an earlier interview with OTTplay, the cinematographer had said that Barroz is a visual film and doesn’t have a conventional story. “It’s got magical realism; also because it’s 3D and VFX heavy, it requires a lot of time and effort during the shoot as well as its post production,” he said.
Both Mohanlal and Santosh Sivan had recently also shot for Priyadarshan’s segment Olavum Theeravum for the Netflix anthology based on MT Vasudevan Nair’s stories.
