In a chat with OTTplay, ahead of the release of his web series debut Guns & Gulaabs, Dulquer also spoke about why he’s not done a Kannada film yet
Malayalam star Dulquer Salmaan has had a very busy few weeks; he’s got his first web series guns & Gulaabs coming out on August 18, and only days later, his big Onam release, King of Kotha hits theatres. Promotions for both these projects have been taking him to different parts of the country and we caught up with him, albeit very briefly during his stopover in Bengaluru. Among the few things we discussed, one was why he’s not done any work in Kannada yet. He has, after all, been doing a lot of cross-border collaborations, whether it is Tamil, Telugu or Hindi.
‘I could easily crack Kannada’
“It’s not like I am deliberately staying away from Kannada cinema. It depends on what comes my way and if I am thrilled about it. I don’t think it’s a language that I would find alien; I’m sure that I could easily crack it,” said Dulquer. But what about a production from his home banner? “See, production is a very different type of beast; you have to really know your market. Having said that, we are setting up a new division of the production house with a bunch of people from Bengaluru, so, you never know, we might just produce something in Kannada,” he added.

‘We might be collaborating with…’
Is there anyone in particular that he’s looking at collaborating with? “I am open to anyone. But I really enjoyed all my conversations with Rishab Shetty when we met for several round-table discussions in Mumbai. In fact, we spoke to Raj (B Shetty); we might be collaborating with him for something that we are producing in Malayalam,” he told OTTplay.
Kannada dubbing
Interestingly, Dulquer’s Guns & Gulaabs did not have a Kannada trailer, which prompted audiences to ask if the language was being ignored. However, makers Raj & DK were quick to assure them that the streamer, Netflix, was working on making it available shortly . Then came questions as to why King of Kotha doesn’t have a Kannada dubbed version. This has not been addressed yet.
