This sci-fi comedy starring The X Files star David Duchovny parodies prehistoric creature films
Sci-fi comedies have forever parodied the possibilities of life beyond Earth through hilarious interpretations. The very idea of life in outer space that happens to drop in on us uninvited may be a matter of extreme celestial coincidence. But this very premise has resulted in several ‘out-of-the-world comedies’ such as Mars Attacks!, Men in Black, Simon Pegg’s Paul among others. In today’s episode of Lost and Found, we’re recommending one that features a meteor from space that crashes down on Earth, triggering a series of events, including the beginning of life, only this time it’s in an exaggeratedly mutant form. Yes, you’ve guessed it, we’re talking about the 2001 sci-fi comedy Evolution.
The film stars The X Files star David Duchovny, Mad TV’s Orlando Jones, American Pie’s Stifler, Seann William Scott, apart from Julliane Moore in lead roles. When a meteor drops on earth in a nondescript American town, two geology profs from a local highschool happen to be among the first few to examine its impact. By the time they arrive at the disastrous ramifications of this mystery rock which triggers the evolution of mutant rodents, prehistoric creatures and even transforms plants into carnivores, the federal agencies and the military are on the scene. Speaking of speedy escalation, this town soon becomes inflicted by giant creatures that wreak havoc and become a threat to all. Picture a primitive dino-like mutant bustling about town, flattening vehicles and humans who happen to fall in its path. But the proceedings are not as devastating and the mood is consistently light. So we won’t go all the way to compare this one with Jurassic Park or King Kong for that matter. But if you’re one for creature comedies, a genre that’s barely managed to crystalise its place in mainstream cinema, you need to add this one to your watchlist right away. Helmed by Ivan Reitman, the director of superhit comedies such as Ghostbusters (1984), Twins (1988) and Kindergarten Cop (1990), Evolution is a fun ride and will keep you simultaneously thrilled and amused throughout its runtime. Just keep a safe distance from your TV screen while streaming this one!
