The movie is the remake of the Malayalam horror-thriller Ezra, which had Prithviraj Sukumaran and Priya Anand in the lead
After Laxmii and Durgamati, it seems another Bollywood horror thriller is heading for a direct-to-OTT release. The latest to join the list is Emraan Hashmi’s Ezra, which is looking at a July release on Amazon Prime Video, according to reports.
A source from the film’s team, on condition of anonymity, tells OTTplay, “We are in discussions with an OTT platform for the movie’s release but it has still not been confirmed yet. An official announcement will be made soon.”
Ezra, which is the Hindi remake of the Malayalam movie with the same title, is directed by Jay K, who had also helmed the original. The Malayalam horror-thriller had Prithviraj Sukumaran, Priya Anand, Tovino Thomas and Sudev Nair in the lead and revolved around the paranormal events affecting a couple after the wife purchases an antique box. The film touches upon the Jewish concept of dybbuk, a malevolent spirit that possesses the body of a living person.
While the Mollywood film used the Jewish community of Mattanchery and Chendamangalam in Kochi to tell the story, the Bollywood movie is set in Mauritius. “The island country also has a small Jewish community, so the plot remains almost the same. However, the horror elements in the Bollywood film will be twice that of the Malayalam movie,” says the source.
Apart from Emraan, Ezra also has Darshana Banik, Manav Kaul and Viviana Singh. Mollywood’s Sujith Vaassudev, who cranked the camera for the original, is the cinematographer for the Bollywood remake too.
