Emmy Awards 2023: Vir Das wins an award for Vir Das: Landing

Vir Das has made India proud on the global map. The comedian won an International Emmy Award for Comedy at the Emmy Awards 2023.

Vir Das certainly must be on cloud nine! The comedian, who was present at the Emmy Awards 2023, bagged an International Emmy Award for Comedy at the ceremony. Vir received the award for Vir Das: Landing. He shared this honour with the UK show Derry Girls' season 3. For the uninitiated, Das was nominated in the same category, in 2021, for Vir Das: For India.

Vir Das wins Emmy Award

Emmy Awards made an official announcement about the same on Instagram. While sharing the post, they wrote, "We have a Tie! The International Emmy for Comedy goes to "Vir Das: Landing” produced by Weirdass Comedy / Rotten Science / Netflix (sic)."

Talking about his big victory at the Emmys 2023, Vir said, "This moment is truly surreal – an incredible honor that feels like a dream.  Winning an Emmy for Vir Das: Landing in the Comedy Category is not just a milestone for me but for Indian comedy as a whole. It's heartening to see Vir Das: Landing resonate globally, thanks to Netflix, Aakash Sharma and Reg Tigerman who made it special. My journey from crafting local stories to receiving a global accolade has been both challenging and rewarding, and Netflix has been instrumental in that growth. I'm excited about the continued exploration of diverse narratives, from Noida to the International Emmys - India gets you there."

Ektaa Kapoor's big victory

Apart from Vir Das, it was Ektaa Kapoor, who was honoured at the prestigious award ceremony. She became the first Indian woman filmmaker to win an International Emmy Directorate Award.

Expressing joy over the same, Ektaa said in a statement, "I’m delighted to receive the prestigious Emmys Directorate Award! It brings me immense joy and happiness to be honoured at a global scale, such as this.I’ve always wanted to tell stories because they give me a chance to be heard, seen and represented."

Hard luck for Shefali Shah and Jim Sarbh

While Vir Das and Ektaa Kapoor won big, Shefali Shah and Jim Sarbh didn't bag awards at the ceremony. Shah was nominated for Best Performance by an Actress for Delhi Crime 2. On the other hand, Jim Sarbh was nominated for Best Performance by an Actor for his web show Rocket Boys.
