Disney’s most terrifying villainesse Cruella - from the fan favourite 101 Dalmations franchise - is getting a sequel. The studio behind Emma Stone-starrer hit movie Cruella is already in early stages of development for the sequel. According to a report by The Hollywood Reporter, director Craig Gillespie and screenwriter Tony McNamara are expected to work on the sequel.

Emma Stone is being applauded for breathing new life into Cruella de Vil.

Cruella was released in theatres and on digital platforms simultaneously on May 28 this year. This fresh take on the transformation of Cruella, from a fashion designer to a force to be reckoned with, is said to have earned about $48.5 million globally. A statement by Disney’s spokesperson said, “We are very pleased with Cruella’s box office success, in conjunction with its strong Disney+ Premier Access performance to date.” Apart from receiving positive reviews all around, the movie was also noted for its 70’s punk rock aesthetic set in London.

“The film has been incredibly well received by audiences around the world, with a 97 per cent Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes in addition to A’s in every demographic from CinemaScore on opening weekend, ranking it among the most popular of our live-action reimaginings. We look forward to a long run as audiences continue to enjoy this fantastic film,” the statement further read.

In an interview with Collider, Craig Gillespie also hinted that there might be a second part to the movie. When asked if he would like to see Cruella’s story continue in another film, he said: “I feel like we’ve only just met her. I’d love to now see the full-blown Cruella, fully loaded. She’s managed to get the support system around her and she can really expand on her brand. I’d love to see where that takes her and how you could almost destroy her from inside out, if she’s not careful with all that power.”

Gillespie’s live action reimagination of the classic villainess revolved around her origin story, decades before she wreaked havoc in Disney’s 101 Dalmatians animated movie. Cruella will be made available in India on Disney+ Hotstar on August 27.
