Emergency: Anupam Kher joins Kangana Ranaut’s film, character poster out

Emergency marks Kangana Ranaut’s next stint in the director’s chair, as well as her first solo directorial venture. It was announced that Anupam Kher has come on board for the film, essaying the role of late politician Jayaprakash Narayan.

Kher shared the news on his official social media handles and unveiled his character poster and first look from the film. The actor captioned the post “BIG: Happy and proud to essay the role of the man who questioned fearlessly, a rebel in the truest sense of the word, #JayaPrakashNarayan in @kanganaranaut starrer and directorial next #Emergency. My 527th! Jai Ho!”.

In a statement, Ranaut opened up about the character and why she chose Kher for the role. Calling J P Narayan one of the ‘most powerful people after Mahatma Gandhi’ the actress said that the late politician had a huge influence on people. So she wanted an actor whose calibre could match the larger than life personality of Narayan. According to Ranaut, Kher fit the role perfectly due to his stature, acting skills and overall persona, and the actress felt honoured that Kher chose to come on board for the film.

Kher spoke of how he had found Ranaut’s interpretation of the character ‘fascinating’, as she had chosen to treat the character as a ‘hero’ in the film. Kher said that even though he had done his own research for the role, Ranaut had made things easier for him with the amount of ‘homework’ she did. “When you have a director, who knows his or her job, it becomes easy for an actor to follow those instructions and perform,” Kher said.

The actor also added that he felt happy to essay the role of a historical figure who “changed the scenario of independent India”.

In addition to writing, directing and producing the film, Ranaut also stars in it as well, essaying the role of Indira Gandhi.
