Emergency actress Kangana Ranaut claims she DECLINED Deepika Padukone's role in Padmaavat to 'not play dress up'

Kangana Ranaut refused to play Deepika Padukone on the big screen and netizens agree with the Emergency actress' point of view.

Kangana Ranaut has been spilling the beans while promoting her latest film, Emergency. The actress now claims that among the various film offers her way, she was also offered to play Rani Padmavati in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Padmaavat, a role which eventually went to Deepika Padukone. Kangana 'did not want to play dress up' and thus, she turned down the very role that viewers loved to see Deepika portray.

While talking to Abhijeet Bharti, Kangana spilled the beans on being offered Padmaavat and rejected it. She recalled her conversation with Sanjay Leela Bhansali, which led to the rejection. Kangana wanted the script of the film but he refused to give her one. When asked about the heroine's role, Bhansali told Kangana that Padmavati would be dressing up when the hero (played by Shahid Kapoor) would look at her. "When I watched the film, I realized that the heroine is indeed just getting ready throughout the movie, and he was right," she said.

How netizens are reacting to Kangana Ranaut's statement on Padmavati's role in Padmaavat

Netizens believed that Kangana made so much sense when she said that Padmavati was simply dressing up the entire movie. Many who watched the film again, observed that all Padmavati did was dance and dress up, till the final scene at least.

About Padmaavat and Emergency and their similar (almost) tragic fate

SLB's Padmaavat, also starring Ranveer Singh in the lead role, faced objection even before its release. The film set was destroyed thrice in an attempt to stop the filming process. After the hiccups, Padmaavat (a name changed) was finally released in theatres.

Kangana's Emergency also came in hot waters, but this time it was at the censor board. The film was stuck for the longest time, which caused a massive delay in its release. Initially scheduled for the October 2024 release, the movie ended up being out in theatres only now i.e. in January 2025.
