Ektaa Kapoor explains why it's difficult to make movies about women - ‘films celebrating feminism are not...’

Crew co-producer Ektaa Kapoor delves into the dynamics of the industry, revealing about the challenges faced in portraying women-centric films.

Ekta Kapoor, who is currently busy with her upcoming film Crew, starring Tabu, Kareena Kapoor Khan, and Kriti Sanon is known for her work in Television as well as films. Recently, the producer shed light on the complex workings of the entertainment industry. She also highlighted the challenges faced in presenting the stories that are focussed on women.

In an open conversation, Kapoor expressed mistrust about profit concerns and the audience's appeal when a film is women-centric. She revealed that while there have been changes in the industry, the film industry still has challenges in backing films that center around women. She, however, makes notes of a concerning trend where the phrase 'feminism' seems to be avoided or greeted within the film fraternity. The ongoing fight for gender parity and representation in the cinematic landscape is also highlighted by the producer.

Actress Richa Chadha, who was also present at the panel said, “We can sit in these English panels in five-star hotels, but we have to translate that into something actual, what all of us take back from this conversation.” It is to be noted that Chadha recently turned producer with the Sundance winner 'Girls Will Be Girls'. Giving an example of how production hired seasoned male lighting specialists who educate the crew for inmate scenes involving female ensembles. The women with training have gone to important roles in the Indian industry.

This is not the first time where this subject has been brought to light. Topics like 'women-centric films' or 'pay differences between male and female actors' have been in discussions for years in the industry. Many actresses have also openly spoken about the same but it just keeps stretching and nothing happened about it. It's high time that this discussion comes to an end where the female actors or the female crew get paid or get the importance exactly like the male actors of the industry. Apart from that women-centric movies should be given the exact importance of any other film as well.

Meanwhile, on the work front, Crew, starring the talented ladies Tabu, Kareena Kapoor Khan, and Kriti Sanon and produced by Rhea Kapoor and Ekta Kapoor is all set to release in cinemas on March 29, 2024.
