Five Things To Know Before Watching Dune Prophecy

There is so much curiosity to dive into the world of Dune yet again that netizens are already reading into the theories and possibilities of where the new HBO Max/JioCinema show can go. For months now, since right after the release of Dune: Part Two we have been talking about the first spin-off prequel series to the film trilogy, Dune: Prophecy. A show that stars our superstar Tabu in a pivotal part is one of the most anticipated shows across the globe. But before you get to see it on November 17, there are a few things you need to know about the show that will make your viewing experience smoother and also engrossing because you already know these five things.

Things You Must Know About Dune: Prophecy

About Dune: Prophecy

Dune: Prophecy is an upcoming television series spin-off of the feature film Dune. The series will focus on the Bene Gesserit. Dune: Prophecy will premiere on HBO Max and JioCinema on November 17, 2024. The series is set 10,000 years before the events of Dune and is based on the novel Sisterhood of Dune. The show follows the Harkonnen sisters as they combat forces that threaten the future of humankind and establish the fabled sect known as the Bene Gesserit.

Dune: Prophecy stars Tabu as Sister Francesca, Emily Watson as Valya Harkonnen, Olivia Williams as Tula Harkonnen, Jodhi May as Empress Natalya Arat, Sarah-Sofie Boussnina as Princess Ynez Corrino, Shalom Brune-Franklin as Mikaela, Faoileann Cunningham as Sister Jen, Jade Anouka as Sister Theodosia, Chris Mason as Keiran Atreides, and an ensemble cast.

The Harkonnen Sisters

The Harkonnens in the film series are portrayed as villains and associated with negative impacts. However, the show takes you back to a time when the Harkonnen sisters—Valya, Tula, and Francesca—saved humanity and were the true heroes. Emily Watson’s Valya is described as a deeply troubled individual shaped by a traumatic childhood and driven by a desire for vengeance. Tula, played by Olivia Williams, is fierce and loyal. Meanwhile, Francesca, played by Tabu, is strong, intelligent, and alluring. Her character will play a pivotal role in shaping events within the series and is expected to leave a lasting impression on viewers.

The Politics of Dune: Prophecy

Set 10,000 years before the events of the Dune trilogy, the show presents an altogether different world. As the women are about to save humanity by forming the sisterhood we now know as the Bene Gesserit, we see a deeper dive into the politics of the time. The series will showcase how the Harkonnen sisters navigate power struggles within an Imperium still reeling from past conflicts.

Themes of Identity & Humanity

Dune: Prophecy will explore themes surrounding humanity's struggle with technology and identity in a post-Butlerian world. The absence of thinking machines raises questions about what it means to be human in this universe. The Harkonnens are fighting to save humankind, which itself is a battle that will help the world of Dune examine themes of identity and humanity in a big way.

The Technical Marvel

If there’s anything consistent in the Dune films, it is maintaining a massive production scale. The franchise depends on this scale because it creates an entirely new world. The show promises to do the same. The trailer has already confirmed that the visual language of the show is as rich as that of the two films, with no compromise in that regard. The creators and executive producers have confirmed they are only aiming to enhance this scale, as they are very interested in doing so.

Dune: Prophecy consists of six episodes, with new episodes releasing every Monday on JioCinema Premium, starting November 18th, in English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Bengali, and Marathi.
