If the promotions of Kurup in 2021 are anything to go by, it’s safe to say that Dulquer Salmaan’s King of Kotha will set the bar in Malayalam for how makers should go about marketing their films, ahead of its pan-Indian theatrical release.

In the recent past, several Malayalam movies including Tovino Thomas and Asif Ali’s mega blockbuster 2018 had suffered due to the lack of promotions outside the State. But Dulquer and his production company Wayfarer Films are sure to set new standards with their upcoming period gangster-actioner, which already has a huge hype being the superstar’s second big-budget theatrical release in Malayalam post pandemic.

While the film is only expected to hit theatres on August 24 as part of this year’s Onam releases, the makers have already begun their campaign and on Wednesday, launched an intriguing poster that hints at a teaser release soon.

The poster had Dulquer’s character sitting on the hood of his Mercedes Benz against a smoky background that also masked his face. The team had previously released two posters that had the actor in two different looks.

In an earlier interview with OTTplay, the movie’s writer Abhilash N Chandran told us, “It’s a period film. It will have portions in the 1980s as well as the 1990s. Dulquer will also be seen in multiple get-ups in the movie.”

The film, which is made on a huge budget, will mark the directorial debut of veteran filmmaker Joshiy’s son Abhilash Joshiy. Shot extensively in Karaikudi, Tamil Nadu, along with portions in Kochi, Madurai, Rameshwaram and Manali, the film also has Aishwarya Lekshmi, Prasanna, Chemban Vinod Jose, Gokul Suresh, Nyla Usha, Shabeer Kallarakkal, Sudhi Koppa and Shammi Thilakan, who plays the father of Dulquer’s character in the film.

Last week, Gokul, who plays a pivotal role in the movie, said that all characters of the movie have layers to them. “It’s also a film that has the potential to gross Rs 200 crore at the box office, considering the pan-Indian star Dulquer is,” he said, in an interview with The Cue.
