Dulquer Salmaan’s King of Kotha, which is helmed by Abhilash Joshiy, is a gangster-actioner set to release during Onam 2023
Malayalam superstar Dulquer Salmaan’s highly-anticipated gangster-actioner King of Kotha, which marks the directorial debut of Abhilash Joshiy, is gearing up for its final schedule later this month. The team of the film, which had an exhaustive schedule of 95 days in Tamil Nadu, will now head to North India to can its final few sequences.
A source from the team exclusively tells OTTplay, “Five more days of shooting is still pending. These portions will be shot in Chandigarh and Manali by the end of March.”

The movie, which is scripted by Porinju Mariyam Joshiy’s writer Abhilash N Chandran, is bankrolled by Dulquer’s Wayfarer Films and the actor has left no stone unturned to ensure that the movie is a big-screen spectacle.
“It’s a period film. It will have portions in the 1980s as well as the 1990s. Dulquer will also be seen in multiple get-ups in the movie – two of which have already been revealed through the posters,” says the source.
Apart from Dulquer, the movie also has Aishwarya Lekshmi, Prasanna, Chemban Vinod Jose, Gokul Suresh, Nyla Usha, Shammi Thilakan, Sudhi Koppa and Shabeer Kallarakkal as part of the cast. Majority of the film is set in a fictional town called Kotha. “Karaikudi, Madurai and Rameshwaram were some of the locations in Tamil Nadu, with Karaikudi being the place where the film was extensively shot,” says the source.
In an earlier interview with OTTplay, the film’s director Abhilash Joshiy said, “It’s a gangster film based on the events that happen in a town called Kotha. It’s not a typical ‘mass’ film; it has equal importance to emotions, romance and songs as much as action. The movie will have elements that will appeal to the youth as well as the family audience.”
King of Kotha is set for a worldwide theatrical release during Onam 2023. It will also mark Dulquer’s second straight Malayalam theatrical film since the pandemic.
