The movie, which released in theatres worldwide on November 12, will be looking to topple the record of Mohanlal’s Lucifer to become highest grossing Malayalam movie
Dulquer Salmaan’s Kurup is well on its way to topple Mohanlal’s Lucifer to become the highest grossing Malayalam film ever. The young star shared that the Srinath Rajendran directorial has crossed Rs 75 crore in box-office earnings worldwide since its release on November 12 with 35,000 shows already completed.
With this week seeing few Malayalam releases, Kurup is expected to extend its run at least till Mohanlal’s Marakkar: Arabikadaline hits theatres on December 2. Dulquer, who is also the co-producer of Kurup, had earlier rejected offers from OTTs to opt for a theatrical release, despite seating occupancy in Kerala theatres being set at 50%.
The film has already become the highest-grossing Malayalam film in Australia, beating the record held by Lucifer in just two weeks of its release, according to the latest ComScore report.
The movie has had a golden run thanks to theatres across Kerala providing special shows, with it being the first big-budget Malayalam film to release in cinema halls. At the time Kurup had confirmed its theatrical release, Marakkar’s producer Antony Perumbavoor had backed out from the deal, causing the producer to lose the leverage of releasing the Mohanlal-starrer in a record number of theatres.
Kurup released in 500+ theatres in Kerala, a record that other films will struggle to beat considering that there weren’t other releases on November 12. Marakkar, meanwhile, will have more number of shows per screen. The response for its advance ticket sales have been phenomenal, with fan shows starting as early as 12am scheduled in several theatres across the State.
If both movies manage to rake in record sum, it will be a welcome relief to theatre exhibitors as well as those in the film industry that has been adversely affected by the pandemic and regulations over the best part of the past two years. It would also provide hope for upcoming movies that are set to hit theatres in December and especially the Christmas releases.
